Get Your Spooky On: Ghost Towns and Gold Mines

Transport back to Montana’s mining days by planning a trip to one of the state’s well-preserved ghost towns, many of which are found in Southwest Montana.

These towns were once thriving boom towns for gold and silver mining. Today they allow visitors to experience the feel of the Old West. See them firsthand at these upcoming events:

  • June 6: For over 100 years, the Old Montana State Prison in Deer Lodge served as the main prison for the state. On June 6, the prison will offer visitors the chance to experience paranormal activity during the Old Montana Prison Ghost Tour, which starts at 8 p.m. and goes until 2 a.m.
  • July 18-19: Travel back in time to Montana’s first territorial capital during Bannack Days (celebrating its 50th anniversary this year), when visitors can experience the “Old West” with live reenactments, demonstrations and guided tours of this once booming gold-mining town.
  • Fourth of July in Virginia City: What was once the site of the richest placer gold strike in the Rocky Mountains, Virginia City is another well-preserved former mining town that comes alive in the summer months. Plan a trip around July 4 for fireworks, music and more local entertainment.
