Held June 25-27 in Crow Agency, the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Little Bighorn marks a major milestone, paying homage to critical Indigenous history and honoring those who fought. The conflict occurred by the Little Bighorn River, in present-day Southeast Montana. It was a clash between U.S. Army forces and a large alliance of Lakota, Northern Cheyenne and Arapaho warriors. Each group was motivated by distinct experiences, priorities and ties to the area.
The site is also known as “Custer’s Last Stand,” and the anniversary features a reenactment hosted by the Real Bird family, tribal commemorations, interpretive trails, exhibits and ranger-led programs to give visitors more information about the events of June 1876 and the broader history surrounding them.
